Nothing provides proof of the temporary nature of the life we live like the untimely death of a public figure like Perry High School football coach Herb Lane Jr.
At just 44 years old, he was taken from the Perry school community and from the Commodores football and basketball teams he served as varsity and assistant coach respectively.
His death in a traffic accident Monday night is a grim reminder that there is no guarantee that this day will be followed by another and that business left unfinished at the end of the day will ever be completed.
The gutsy performance by the Perry boys basketball team in winning a regional semi-final game Tuesday night, just over 24 hours after Herb’s untimely death, is something I know that would have made him very proud.
The sad lesson for the team members and all of us is that life is a gift and tomorrow is not a guarantee.
That’s the way I see it.
