I’m Hip To Be Square – Bob Ulm
One of the songs in our massive FUN 107.1 library is Huey Lewis & The News “Hip To Be Square”.
Back in the day when I was in a band I could hit all of the high notes while performing it.
I think after a couple of Bud Lights I might still be able to do so.
Much more so now then when the song was released in 1986, I find I am far more comfortable than I thought I might ever be with being just that “Square”.
In fact there is a “coolness”, if only in my own mind, with being happy with most everything that living 61 years has allowed me to be.
That’s not to say that I think I know nearly everything, or that I’m sure that I have it all figured out.
Because the longer I live, the more certain I am that there are things I don’t know and will never understand.
It’s just that I don’t have to care about the latest fad, or have to know the lyrics to today’s top songs, or to impress others with my knowledge about what’s hot at the movies, or on the tube, if I don’t want to care.
If I wish, I can wear that worn out Indians shirt and jeans a tad too tight in public, unless Kathy thinks it best that I don’t.
I only have to prove to those who are important to me that I will do anything I can for them, and to those who choose to listen to me that I am committed to doing my best every day.
And if my Grandchildren think I’m funny, or are amazed that I still like to have fun, that’s just a bonus.
That’s the way I see it.
