Attending and covering a pre-election Delphos mayoral candidates forum, as I did on Tuesday night, kind of restores my faith in communities and the people who want to serve them.
We’re so used to seeing national and state candidates debates with well-scripted responses to softball questions following hours and hours of preparation controlled by experienced handlers.
So to hear the 4 candidates who want to be elected for a 2-year term in this years’ election was very refreshing.
The nervousness that most of the candidates exhibited, as they made their cases for election, came from the fact that for at least some of them, the crowd of people who turned out for the Delphos Chamber Of Commerce and Delphos Rotary Club event constituted the largest number of people they’d ever had to get in front of and speak.
And as I had anticipated, there were none of the personal jabs or “gotchas” that have so punctuated the debates on the national stag.
All they had were just differing ideas on issues that matter to the citizenry.
My hat goes off to the 4 candidates who’ve stepped up to run for public office when most sit on the side lines.
There are 4 choices for Delphos voters.
And whoever wins, will do his best to serve the people who vote for him…and those who don’t vote for him as well.
That’s the way I see it.
