The Miami Erie canal was constructed in the 1850’s to carry cargo from Lake Erie to the Ohio river.
But to our 3-year old grandson, it’s “the stinky pond with the ducks”.
That was the destination for a stroller ride for grandma Kathy, Evan, and me on an unusually mild February Saturday for what was some of the greatest entertainment I’ve enjoyed in a long time.
With a bag full of bread crumbs in hand, Evan greeted the more than a dozen ducks on the water with a shout of “hey guys it’s me Evan Robert Moody and I’ve got food for you!”
Over the next 20 minutes or so, we watched and listened as he enjoyed throwing morsels to the ducks.
And he laughed as the ducks he gave names to like Pete, Daffy, and Mickey battled over the crumbs while quacking and splashing in the water like it was their job.
When the crumbs were all gone Evan assured the ducks that he’d be back…and I’m sure he will be.
It struck me that we’d enjoyed a slice of life that didn’t cost a dime and happened within blocks of home.
I’m not sure that Evan will remember the visit to “the stinky Pond’ when he grows up, but I know that we will.
That’s the way I see it.
