The people who get paid to figure out why Americans watch what they watch on tv are scratching their heads these days, about the television ratings the Summer Olympics aren’t getting. Viewership for the NBC network Olympics coverage so far is about half of what it was for the last summer games 5 years ago. There are several theories as to why there’s been such a dramatic ratings decline. One is that there’s been a lack of crowd interaction during the events that people enjoy watching because of a spectator ban imposed after a spike in coronavirus cases in Japan. Another is that fewer American adults every day are getting their entertainment from live network television. A 3rd is that at least some people here in the U S are turned off by what they regard as anti-American displays from a few athletes that have occurred during preliminary events leading up to the Tokyo games. Perhaps because they are a largely visual event I admit to having zero interest in the Olympics and this time it appears I am not alone. That’s the way I see it.
