Early Friday evening I’ll have the pleasure of doing a live broadcast from the annual Heart Beat Of Lima Tom Ahl Car Show, at the Tom Ahl Dealerships on Allentown road in Lima.
The fact that funds raised from the show go to one of my favorite charities, that I’ll be surrounded by things I enjoy like vintage cars and classy motorcycles and that there’ll be lots of food and kids activities promise to make the broadcast between 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. one of the highlights of my summer.
over the last 45 years I’ve done lots of such broadcasts and it’s always been fun to meet with listeners who’ve made my career possible.
There have been some challenging ones though.
More than once thunderstorms rained us out
and one of my first reinforced the idea that just because you have an idea, doesn’t make it a good idea.
Back in 1974 we thought it would be neat to show listeners how a radio show works.
We brought turntables records and everything you’d need to a July 4th event in Stadium Park.
I discovered early in the broadcast however, that hot summer sun and vinyl records don’t mix. .
Virtually every record we brought was warped so badly that they wouldn’t play without skipping. About that day I just remember praying that it would rain and we’d have to wrap up early.
Fortunately we won’t be using records during my August 9th live broadcast, but I do hope you’ll stop by and say hi.
That’s the way I see it.
