Changing Columbus, Ohio’s Name to Flavortown?????????
At any other time in our history you might think this was a tongue-in-cheek joke, but today I’m not sure. A petition drive that’s garnered more than 20,000 signatures demands the name of Ohio’s capital city be changed. The petition signers want the name Columbus to be changed to “flavortown:, a name tied to Columbus native chef Guy Fieri. Opposition is growing across the country to anything that has anything to do with Christopher Columbus, because historians say he enslaved the indigenous people he encountered when he discovered America. The petition drive comes on the heels of a decision by officials at Columbus State to remove a Christopher Columbus statue from their campus and follows an announcement by the mayor of Columbus that a Christopher Columbus statue outside city hall will be taken down and will be placed in storage. It seems unlikely that there ever will be a change approved in the name of Ohio’s capital, but these days who knows! That’s the way I see it.
