For most of the last 20 years of my life, I’ve associated the word “corona” with a beer that’s best enjoyed with a lime. But a virus borne in China that bears the Corona name is creating a lot of concern around the world these days. The Corona virus has killed more than 100 people inside China. At least 5 cases had been confirmed in the U.S. as of early today, and 2 possible cases are being investigated among students that attend Miami University in Oxford Ohio. For the time being at least, each new case in our country will create a news story. I’m hoping at least some of the coverage in the coming days will include information on treatment, how likely someone who contracts the virus is to survive it and on precautions that can be taken to avoid contracting it, other than avoiding travel to China. If not, continuing coverage will only increase the mass media hysteria about the virus and that won’t do anyone any good. That’s the way I see it.
