Whether you regard the dramatic increase in the influx of immigrants coming across our country’s southern border that’s become a reality since late January as a crisis or a surge may well depend on which way you lean politically , or on how close you live to the border. Video evidence is growing and news stories are becoming more numerous about the impact that the arrival of thousands of immigrants from Mexico and Central America is having in places like Texas and Arizona on law enforcement agencies and health services providers already over-burdened because of the pandemic. It seems clear that one of the reasons for the big uptick in immigrant numbers is the promise of free health care and a path to citizenship that’s come from President Biden and some other democrats in Congress. They blame the current situation on former President Trump, contending he left the nation with a broken immigration system. The immigration issue is likely to become the first major challenge of the Joe Biden presidency, and it’s an issue that’s not likely to go away any time soon. That’s the way I see it.
