Deepfakes…VSUS…and more to drive you NUTS
One of the more persistent challenges in my job is to try to keep up with all of the new words and abbreviations that are becoming part of our English language. I learned for example last week that if you a receive a text message with “vsus” in it, it means something is very suspicious. The latest word I’ve learned about is Deepfakes”. These are fake videos that are showing up on online social media sites created by artificial intelligence to try to influence you to do something or support or oppose something or some one. Deepfakes are considered such a growing problem that Amazon is committing a million dollars to team with Facebook for the Deepfake detection challenge. Teams of researchers will be scouring the internet for them and to remove them. They’ll have no shortage of the flicks to study. Experts estimate there are already some 5,000 Deepfakes that have been discovered. Technology may be our friend in many ways, but there’s no shortage of ways that it can be misused. That’s the way I see it.
