With suicides claiming a million lives across North America each year, a presentation in Delphos I served as MC for Sunday night was both topical and important.
The locally based “SHYAA” organization, an acronym for Seek Help You Are Not Alone, hosted Canadian stand up comedian Kevin Breel for a presentation on depression and mental health issues at the Jefferson Middle School.
Though not yet 25-years old, Breel has become widely acclaimed as a proponent of conversation and honest discussion as a way to combat mental health issues.
His own battle with depression began following the death of a best friend when he was just 13 years old, and drove him to the brink of suicide 4 years later.
During a bid to emerge from his depression nightmare, Breel recorded a Ted Talk called “Confessions of a depressed comic” which has garnered more than 4 million views.
I think this would be well worth your time to watch, particularly if you are, or know someone who is battling depression or mental illness in any of it’s many different forms.
That’s the way I see it.
