On a much warmer than normal early April day, my wife Kathy and I had a chance to take our grand sons out to one of the diamonds at Stadium Park here in Delphos for some hitting and catching practice and just enjoy the sunshine when something happened that seemed like a throw-back to the better old days. More than a dozen grade-school aged kids, boys and girls, just showed up at a diamond adjacent to the one we were on, for an old fashioned game of Whiffle Ball. The amazing thing was they apparently decided to get together on their day off from school, on their own, without a single parent or coach to organize it. Those of us who grew up in bigger families with neighborhoods full of kids used to organize basketball, baseball and football games on our own all the time. But, it seems increasingly that that kind of thing has been replaced by activities we think as parents and grand parents that we have to organize and supervise. It was nice to hear kids playing together on their own, enjoying Stadium Park which is truly one of the nicest parts you will find anywhere. That’s the way I see it.
