I don’t know about you, but news I read early today that the 2019 Major League season will be the last on the air for Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman saddened me.
The 76-year-old Brennaman, who’s real name is Franchester Martin Brennaman, has been behind the mic for Reds broadcasts since 1974.
Brennaman is known for calling games for 3 Reds world championships, and for his election to the baseball hall of fame in 2000.
But what has impressed me the most over the years is his ability to make games from a lot of very bad Reds teams sound interesting enough to keep fans listening, and for businesses spending money to sponsor the broadcasts.
Brennaman has made a career out of saying what he thinks about Red’s teams, players, and fans.
He once called Cubs fans the most obnoxious in the national league.
I’m not sure who’ll be named to be the Reds lead play-by-play announcer role once Brennaman’s career is through, but whoever it is, will find some very big shoes to fill.
That’s the way I see it.
