Congratulations to the people in Pennsylvania who were able to get several hundred folks to gather in the darkness yesterday to see first hand the weather predictions of a ground hog. As you’ve probably heard by now, Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow and that’s supposed to mean that we’re in for an early spring. Like most weather forecasters, we’ll forget whether Phil was right or wrong in a couple of days But in the mean time the Punxsutawney economy will have benefited from income from people who braved chilly temperatures to see his “coming out” or perhaps get a second or 2 of TV exposure. Ground Hog Day has spawned a successful 1993 movie and has come to mean any day that seems like just another day. You have to wonder how the ground hog day event began or who’s idea it was to depend on a ground hog to predict weather but it’s proof once again that Americans love events, no matter how meaningless they really are. That’s the way I see it.
