Helping others……………….
You might wish that the issue of what should be done to assist refugees who’ve fled Afghanistan would be the responsibility of someone else in some other state, but it will not be. The first of what is expected to be the first of several groups of refugees from Afghanistan being resettled by our federal government, will be arriving soon in Columbus, Akron, Cleveland Cincinnati and Toledo And others are sure to follow. Social service agencies in those cities are being told they should be prepared to assist the refugees now and for the foreseeable future. Many of the refugees are Afghans who assisted the United States during our nations’ 20-year long war effort in Afghanistan, who would have faced certain reprisal from the Taliban now in firm control of their country. The refugees will need food housing and other assistance for some time and the costs may be considerable but most Americans seem to agree that we have an obligation to assist those who helped us during our country’s longest war effort ever. That’s the way I see it.
