Humor and the rear view mirror
With out any notice it appears to me that an entertainment art form many of us have enjoyed in the past is fast disappearing. That’s political satire that’s actually funny. I may be wrong but the comedians I’ve heard of late appear to have chosen the audience they want to play to, and that directs the jokes they do. You can tell which way most comedians lean politically in about 30 seconds. Maybe things look different through the rear view mirror but it seems many of the comedians in the past made politically inspired jokes that were a lot more likely to make me laugh. Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and even the comedians who appeared during the first few seasons on Saturday Night Live took funny jabs at Republicans and Democrats in equal measure, but that’s all changed today. Maybe that’s the result of increasingly splintered and divided audiences, or the realization that no matter who or what you choose to tell a joke about, somebody somewhere is going to get offended. That’s the way I see it.
