Yesterday afternoon I asked SIRI to give me the score of the Cleveland Browns game. She responded that the Browns were defeating “the football team” in the 4th quarter. The “football team” is the name Washington Dc’s National Football League franchise is using this season after under pressure from activists the team dropped the name Redskins. Siri’s response got me thinking. It is time professional sports teams dropped their nicknames altogether. After all, who alive today knows that the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA got their name from their original location in Minnesota. What does the name Browns have to do with Cleveland, The Cardinals with St. Louis or most other franchise nick names with the cities they play in. What is an Indianapolis Colt, Or a Seattle Seahawk. There are traditionalists who will say teams shouldn’t drop their nick names because some find them offensive, but in the cancel culture we live in, It seems to me that that train has already started to leave the station. That’s the way I see it.
