JUNETEENTH……………………………………..
There is nothing that should make you smile more on a Friday in June than the word that a new summer time day off may be in our future. Texas Democrat Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is backing legislation in congress that would make June teenth a new national holiday. Today is June teenth. It was on June 19,1865 that the commander of Union forces controlling Galveston Texas told that city’s black population that they were no longer slaves. It’s regarded as the day that slavery ended in the U.s.,and Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the day that one of the darkest periods in our country’s history came to an end. Let’s all admit it most of us would welcome another day off each year while the weather is nice. It will be interesting to see if big labor and federal employee unions try to modify the congresswoman’s legislation to make a Juneteenth national holiday part of a 3-day summer time weekend. At a time when the things that divide us as Americans seem to outnumber the things we agree on, it is possible that the idea of a new federal holiday to celebrate Juneteenth could be one thing that unites us. That’s the way I see it.
