I am not an economist and I don’t have a degree in the study of why people do what they do but it seems to me that all of the proof we need that enhanced weekly unemployment benefits authorized by Congress since the start of the pandemic last year is having a negative impact on the job market is all of the help wanted signs you’re seeing, and all of the help wanted commercials you’re hearing. Many industries have been impacted by a shortage of available workers and many retail and fast food businesses have ben forced to cut back their hours of operation because they can’t find people to work. A Officials in a growing number of states have decided they will no longer except federal government payments for the expanded weekly benefits in their states, in hopes their residents will at least think about going back to work. When asked about the issue earlier this week, President Biden said there was no evidence to suggest that the enhanced job benefits from the federal government was keeping Americans from seeking employment. I suspect many of the people involved in the business of trying to attract workers they can’t find, might well sharply disagree. That’s the way I see it.
