Anyone who has any doubts about how political the Olympic Games have become is getting a lesson in the much publicized saber rattling that’s going on between our president and the leadership in China. President Biden has imposed a diplomatic boycott on the upcoming Winter Games in Beijing, saying U.S. athletes will be permitted to compete but our government will not be represented during any Olympic ceremonies. Responding Chinese officials say our governments’ officials haven’t received any invitations to attend, and won’t be getting any either. There are voices on both sides of the political spectrum who are calling for a more harsh response to China’s well documented human rights violations claiming the diplomatic boycott doesn’t go far enough. Some say we should boycott the upcoming winter games entirely. The winter games are set to begin in Beijing on February 4th of next year And it’s likely that debate on the issue will continue right up until they get underway. That’s the way I see it.
