I never met Tom Seaver and only was a fan when I heard him help the Miracle Mets to win the 1969 world series, or hurl some outstanding performances during his days as a Cincinnati Reds stand out, but word that the man who earned the nickname “Tom Terrific” has been diagnosed with dementia is sad news for me.
His family released a statement yesterday saying the 74-year-old Seaver would not be taking part in any public appearances and was living in his California Vineyard hits home for many of us who grew up hearing of his mound exploits or watching them on TV.
It hits home for anyone who has ever had a family member dealing with the disease.
Perhaps it’s harder to take because as we get older, 74 years old doesn’t seem that old any more.
That’s the way I see it.
