The shortage of people willing to work in almost all industries is well documented around the area and across the nation these days. I’ve recently reported about the difficulty some school districts in the area have faced in finding men and women willing to drive school busses. The school bus driver shortage is so bad in Massachusetts that the state’s governor Charlie Baker has called up national guard troops to help. 250 National guard personell have been called up with the responsibility of driving transportation vehicles that can take up to 10 passengers to and from school. Baker has decreed that the safe transportation of students is a critical need. I seriously doubt that any of the men and women who’ve been called up ever thought that driving a school transportation vehicle would be part of their duties. Of course the idea that a significant number of youngsters would actually walk to and from school seems as old fashioned and out of date as the land-line telephone. That’s the way I see it.
