Summer vacation has begun, or soon will, for students in high schools across the area and it seems many young people may miss out on an opportunity we took advantage of. That’s getting a summer job. Back in the day, a summer job wasn’t just a way to keep us busy and out of trouble, it was also a way to earn money we could spend for ourselves. A summer job also taught us valuable lessons like showing up for work on time, going to work when you didn’t feel like it, and perhaps more importantly how to balance work with other things like sports and hanging out with friends.Employers who depend on seasonal young workers tell me they’re having a difficulty finding them this year.Maybe that’s because some young people would rather spend time on the couch in front of tv sets, or tethered to their phones.Maybe it’s because their parents or guardians have taken the adage that kids need time to be kids too far. Any teen looking for a summer job this year, will likely find several they can choose from. That’s the way I see it.
