The Cleveland ?????????????????
It’s looking increasingly like the Cleveland Indians major league baseball team may be called the Cleveland “something elses” in the near future. Word that the team’s ownership will consider a name change for the more than 100-year-old franchise came over the weekend. The team has been under pressure to change it’s name for decades. Protesters with signs demanding a name change have been at tribe home games since at least 1990 probably longer. The name change consideration is taking place as major league baseball teams prepare for a shortened 2020 season that will be unlike any before, with games played without fans in the stands when they begin July 24th. The consideration is also taking place it seems in kind of a vacuum as Indians ownership considers the social significance of a name change with no way to gauge what impact it will have on their bottom line if fans angered by any name change refuse to buy game tickets. That’s the way I see it.
