The decision by the world’s number 1 female gymnast to withdraw from yesterday’s team gymnastics competition at the Tokyo summer games, and her announcement that she won’t defend her gold medal in the all-around competition on Thursday has sparked valuable new discussion about mental health. Simon Biles says she is prioritizing her own mental health over competing in the summer games. It’s hard for many of us to understand why she would make such an 11th hour decision after practicing and training for years for a chance to compete in Tokyo. That’s particularly true I think for people who’ve never had to deal with mental health issues, that can impact sports figures, and do effect every day people dealing with life’s every day struggles. If the publicity surrounding Biles’ decision can convince people who face mental health struggles to get the help they need to deal with them,in the end it will be far more valuable than any metal Biles might have won at the summer games. That’s the way I see it.
