Results of a new poll on Americans released this week show their approval for the work our nations’ health care workers are doing has increased by more than 40 percent since March while their view of the job being done by the national news media has declined by at least 5 percent since then. The reason health care workers are being found in such an increasingly favorable light is obvious. They’ve been on the front lines of efforts to control a pandemic the experts say is the worst that’s been seen in more than a century. The national news media on the other hand is viewed by many people on both sides of the political spectrum as being increasingly partisan in the stories they present and the way they are presented. It seems to me that the goal of national media organizations has changed from that of “informing” Americans about what’s going on to “educating” Americans on how they should feel about the issues facing us. During these extremely contentious days it’s not likely that the perception of the work being done by the national media will do anything but continue to decline. That’s the way I see it.
